Yertle the Turtle and Other Stories (1958)

Written by Theodor Seuss Geisel (Dr. Seuss)

Dr. Seuss presents three modern fables in the rhyming favorite Yertle the Turtle and Other Stories. The collection features tales about greed (“Yertle the Turtle”), vanity (“Gertrude McFuzz”), and pride (“The Big Brag”).

Yertle The Turtle is about an imperious turtle king who insists on climbing on the shoulders of his subjects. The precarious pyramid rests on the back of one small turtle who finally realizes there's no reason to be the fellow at the bottom of the heap. Gertrude McFuzz recounts the tale of a bird named Gertrude who has a small, plain feather and envies Lolla Lee Lou, who has two feathers. Then, Gertrude gets her wish, but at what cost? The Big Brag tells of a rabbit and a bear, who both boast that they are the "best of the beasts", because of the range of their hearing and smelling abilities, respectively. However, they are humbled by a worm's words.

In no other book does a small burp have such political importance! In this hilarious book, Dr. Seuss explores the pitfalls of growing too big for your boots! This book is recommended for children ages 5 and up. (Copyright © Random House Books for Young Readers. All rights reserved.)
